  • UK Police Forces Embrace 3D Laser Scanning Technology with Leica Geosystems Ltd

Posted January 5, 2012 By in High Definition Surveying With | Make a Comment

We’re pleased to announce the largest ever order of Leica ScanStation C10’s as UK Police Forces embrace High Definition SurveyingTM (HDS). The scanners will be supplied as part of a £2.7 million investment from the Department of Transport to reduce motorway closures following a collision. Delivery of the instruments, full onsite training and support will commence later this month in readiness to help ease the potential traffic congestion caused by major collisions, especially in light of the forthcoming 2012 Olympics.

Roads Minister Mike Penning comments: “There is nothing more frustrating than being stuck in a traffic jam for hours on end. But even worse than that is the shocking £1 billion cost of those lost hours for our economy. That is why we are determined to improve the clear-up of accidents so we can get our motorways re-opened as quickly as possible. The £2.7 million DfT funding award will see 3D laser scanners rolled out quickly where they are needed most. This will benefit drivers by reducing incident clear up times by 39 minutes on average.“

John Rusted, Chairman of the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators (ITAI) and Senior Collision Investigator for Humberside Police comments. “This kit has transformed the way we work and ensures we present the best evidence possible to the courts. In a matter of minutes the ScanStation C10 automatically captures the complexity of the scene including the road markings and topography. Together with the Cyclone software we can quickly and accurately produce 2D plans, put the environment before the court and effectively move them through it using Leica Truview and 3D visualisation.”

3D laser scanning from Leica Geosystems is not new to the police and is already successfully being used by 6 forces around the country for a number of years, for collision investigation and forensic analysis.

Tim Badley, HDS Sales Manager Leica Geosystems states: “The ScanStation C10 is a true surveying instrument and will enable collision investigators to take a 360 degree 3D laser scan of the crash scene in order to accurately locate, document and interpret detailed scene data such as skid-marks and fragments of glass. Complete dome scanning can be achieved in bright sunshine or complete darkness in a matter of minutes, allowing roads to be opened much quicker than ever before. We are proud to be able to support UK Police Forces and the Department of Transport in embracing HDS technology.“

  • Call for Papers Hexagon 2012 HDS/Laser Scanning sub-track

Posted December 9, 2011 By in High Definition Surveying With | Make a Comment

HDS will again be one of the main sub-tracks within the Geosystems track of Hexagon 2012. The HDS sub-track alone will feature more than 35 presentations and 10 hands-on workshops dedicated to laser scanning with Leica and complementary tools. Many outstanding presenters/presentations have already been secured for 2012, but many slots are also still open. If you’re interested in speaking, note that topics must be of genuine interest and value to fellow attendees. Speakers must be open about what they’ve done with HDS and how they did it – openness by speakers and among attendees is a cornerstone of the conference’s high value.

Speakers not only receive free conference registration, but you and your organization can also gain exceptional visibility among fellow attendees, Leica Geosystems and other staff, and attending trade press and media. Speaking increases your networking opportunities and provides maximum positive exposure for your organization. If you are interested in submitting a paper, please directly contact: Geoff Jacobs, geoff.jacobs@leicaus.com; tel +1 925 790 2317 (office) or +1 925 785 7757 (cell). The formal deadline for submitting candidate papers/topics is April 16, 2012; however, competition for speaking slots at this annual event is keen – the sooner you make contact, the better.

  • Leica GeMosystems UK team sprout moustaches!!

Posted December 1, 2011 By in High Definition Surveying With | Make a Comment

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

On Movember 1st, the team at Leica Geosystems UK decided to take to the challenge with a clean-shave face and then for the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as the Leica Geo-Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery.
The Leica Ge-Mo Bros effectively became walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

The team of 14 raised a total of £1150 for the cause and are still collecting funds, so please give generously to a worthy cause, simply head to the Movember website http://uk.movember.com/mospace/index/search/q/leica
